WANT YOU TO KNOW ~ BOB MARLEY

Don’t want you…to move
Want you to stand right there
Till I come
I want you to mooove
Don’t want you to leave…everything
Want you to stand right there
Till I return
Want you to
Want you tooo
Want you to…love
Want you to love
Want you to love
Want you to love
Everytime I walk around

Want you to love

When I’ve got you
Ohh when I’ve got you baby

ARE YOU A BOOK DESIGNER?

Kindly hear this.
"Don't judge a book by its cover."
Poppycock.
This may be one of the falsest things every uttered.
How many times have you not cracked open a book because the cover was terrible?
...
The book cover matters a lot.
It is the first thing we see.
Book design is the art of incorporating the content, style, format, design, and sequence of the various
components of a book into a coherent whole.
It is not rocket science
It is art.

PORTRAIT OF A LEGEND

http://www.mediauk.com/newspapers/discussions/print-chatter/portrait-of-a-legend-and-other-folks

I am a Jamaican photojournalist who will be publishing the book, Portrait of a Legend and other Folks, in August.
The book will contain unpublished photographs I took whilst on tour with reggae Legend Bob Marley in 1980 and will also have an introduction by Nana Rita Marley.
I will be travelling to Jamaica early in February to brief the Minister of Tourism about this project and to finalise negotiations concerning the book launch which it is hoped will be held at the Jamaican High Commission in London on August 3rd.
This year Jamaica is celebrating 50 years of independence and Portrait of a Legend and other Folks will be an added boost to this celebration.
I am now seeking offers from positive Jamaicans who will help fund the launch party.

This, I found enlightening and rather interesting.

BLACK REPORTER MAGAZINE INTERVIEW 1977.
"So how a man like Martin Luther King never know Rastafari mon...if he did know Rastafari that’d be a different thing you know..that's the thing what I don’t like about him..I know he's a preacher...them preacher go out everwhere...them never read through all Revelation..you know them come like King of Kings...Lord of Lords." ~ Robert Nesta Marley speaking about Martin Luther King.

Peace & LOVE.
In art, a portrait executed according to a convention or tradition is termed iconic.
In 1980, I was invited by Robert Nesta Marley to photograph for the very first Rastafarian newspaper in the world, the defunct Survival.
Survival, which had a run of three editions, was edited by Marley's mentor, Mortimo Planno.
The cover portrait for the book, PORTRAIT OF A LEGEND AND OTHER FOLKS, will soon become an iconic image.
This portrait can now be seen in the documentary film, RasTa: A Soul's Journey.
Have a nice day you lot.

FAMILY OF MAN

Black and white photography has a way of letting the viewer really experience the image. Composition, light/shadow, texture and tonal qualities all become more obvious and important when color is absent.
Black and white portraits have an entirely different impact than color ones. When color is removed we are allowed to see into the subject, to really get a sense of emotion more so than if it were color.
Another way I look at it is if an image had a soul it would be black and white. Stripping away the window dressing (color) allows you to get down to the real essence of the image.

LET'S ROCK

Greetings.
We finally begin to ROCK to 2012.
Here is a letter which I share from probably the most respected Bob Marley archivist on planet earth.
Mr Roger 'Jah Roger' Steffens.
**"Dear Lindsay.
Thanks so much for your information on what is sure to be an important book by a true artist.
I am not, unfortunately, able at this time to extend financing to any other projects but my own.
As Toots said, "Time Tough," but I will certainly an advance copy once they are available.
Please let me know.
I wish you all the best success on this worthy book.
One Heart,
Roger."**
Have a nice day peeps.

THE WAILERS AND JOE HIGGS

Joe Higgs helped me to understand that music. He taught me many tings.

Joe Higgs was a brother amongst the Wailers for years. He was encouragement and he inspired us and kept us together.

We looked up to Joe Higgs. He was something like a musical guardian for us. He was a more professional singer, because he was workin' for years wit' a fella named Roy Wilson as Higgs & Wilson. They had a lotta hits and they had the knowledge of the harmony techniques, so he taught us [The Wailers] them. And he 'elped in the studio, to work out our different parts.

JOE HIGGS THE LEGEND

Oh no, another forgotten image I took in 1979 of the late Mr Joe Higgs, musical mentor to Mr. Robert Nesta Marley.

SELASSIE IS THE CHAPEL

Planno gave Marley his coming-out song as a Rastafarian, 'Selassie Is The Chapel'. Over the slow Nyabinghi drum track, Marley chanted, "Haile Selassie is the Chapel, Power of the Trinity, Conquering Lion of Judah, he's the King of Kings." Only 26 copies of the recording were pressed.

COMMIT TO PORTRAIT OF A LEGEND

THE BARRETT BROTHERS

I was to photograph The Legends Carlton Barrett and Familyman Barrett.
I choose the bass, because it is the backbone of the music. And my brother Carly choose the drum, which is the heartbeat. If your drummer is not right, then the music gonna have a bad heart. And if the bass is not right, then the music gonna have a bad back. Just imagine the music with a bad back and a bad heart. It would be crippled, you know. So that’s where we stand forth and strengthen the music...Familyman Barrett

NYAHBINGHI DRUMMERS - BBC FM RADIO - SPRING 1994

SONS OF THUNDER

I was to take this photo of Rastafarian Bredrin' Nyahbinghi drumming.
The drummer must keep his spine straight to aid breathing. Steady, deep breathing is very important, as it is in any practice of meditation. The drums are held between the knees so that the vibration goes into the body. You are not playing the drum so much as surrendering to the drum. The drum becomes an inner consciousness cruiser, transporting the drummer into himself so far that he pops out-as if through an hour glass-into another realm of sensibility which cannot be described or explained by the finite nature of rational understanding. The Sufis do the same with dance; Buddhist monks do it through the mind-numbing repetitions of sutras; Christian monks do it with chanting. The mind is overwhelmed, filled to over flowing, with the harmonics of the sound. All thought, fear, panic, hope, dreams and desires are floated out of the mind like twigs over a dam.
The bass was the downbeat-“down” chasing the oppressor. It is the power drum, the chastiser. The fundue is the heartbeat, one-two, one-two-as steady as life. The repeater sings the song.
